Five modular kitchen layout mistakes we keep fixing
The kitchen layout errors that look fine on a 3D render and become daily annoyances — and how to catch them before execution.
A kitchen can be beautifully finished and still be exhausting to cook in. These are the five issues we most often get called in to correct.
1. The work triangle is too wide
Sink, hob and fridge should form a compact triangle. In long galley kitchens people often spread them evenly along the run, which turns every meal into unnecessary walking.
2. Tall units next to the hob
A tall pantry beside the hob blocks light and makes the cooking corner feel closed in. Move tall storage to the end of the run.
3. Drawers planned as shutters
Base cabinets with shutters mean kneeling and reaching to the back. Deep drawers cost slightly more and are used far more.
4. No landing space beside the hob
You need at least 400mm of free counter on one side of the hob to set down a hot vessel. This gets eaten up by appliance placement surprisingly often.
5. Ignoring the chimney duct route
The duct path has to be decided before the false ceiling goes up. Deciding late means either a visible box or a compromised chimney position.
